SOMALIA
Fartun Abdisalaan Adan
I was born and raised in Somalia. After my husband, a pioneering human rights activist in Somalia, was assassinated in 1996 for his peace-building efforts, I moved to Canada for the sake of my three daughters. In 2007, I returned to Somalia to continue my husband’s work. In Somalia, women are invisible. Their mistreatment, marginalization and abuse, as well as my own experiences of discrimination, causes me to work tirelessly to empower and restore hope for Somali women. They are the most vulnerable. They are the ones suffering. These are all reasons why Sister Somalia is so important and why our work must continue.
